Is Monosodium glutamate (MSG) Safe for Consumption?

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a federally classified food additive that is used to add flavor and appeal to foods.  It actually has no flavour of its own, but it stimulates the taste buds and enhances the flavour of the food. MSG is commonly added to food such as canned vegetables, Chinese food, soups and processed meats.

Although the Food and Drug Administration declared MSG as a "generally recognized as safe" food ingredient, but we must avoid excessive consumption. We all believe that everything is consumed in excessive amounts can be harmful to your health . Therefore, MSG consume in moderation, especially for those who are able-bodied without any restrictions from the doctor MSG diet.

Monosodium glutamate is a salt that is made from glutamate acid. The glutamate in MSG is toxic that has a degenerative effect on the brain and nervous system. In certain situations can lead to neurological problems such as mood changes, becoming confused and migraine.

The glutamate in MSG also causes adverse reactions in MSG-sensitive people. Those reactions can be mild or severe. They can come and go quickly, or be long lasting. These people may experience any of the following symptoms:
• Burning sensation in the back of the neck, forearms and chest
• Numbness in the back of the neck, arms and back
• Tingling, warmth and weakness in the face, temples, upper back, neck and arms
• Facial pressure or tightness
• Chest pain
• Headache
• Nausea
• Rapid heartbeat
• Bronchospasm (difficulty breathing) in MSG-intolerant people with asthma
• Drowsiness
• Weakness

Glutamate industry association cited the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) that MSG's safe consumption limit is 1 / 3 ounce per day or 9.45 grams per day. But people with MSG intolerance can suffer from symptoms such as tingling, headaches, and nausea after eating 3 grams of MSG.

As consumers you should get in the habit of being careful what you eat. If you feel you are sensitive to MSG you should avoid foods containing MSG.
