The importance of light colour in energy saving light bulbs and LED bulbs
Ever since light bulbs were invented by Thomas Edison in 1890 until recent times the colour of light produced has always been the same. The colour of the light, which is a characteristic of the beam from the white hot metal filament, has continually been a characteristic warm yellow glow. With modern technology in energy saving light bulbs it is now achievable to produce them with a wide range of different tints of white with cool blue white shades across the spectrum to yellow shades. Technological advancement has brought with it choice but also complication! 30 years ago then there was just one right choice and the light bulbs created good light but now we have to acknowledge the options and choose wisely for garages and interior living spaces.
The options have come about as a result of the advancements in Halogen Bulbs, Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) and LED Bulbs .
In this review I will explain what colour temperature is and deliver information to allow you to make a more educated choice in energy saving light bulbs .
What exactly is Colour Temperature for energy saving light bulbs?
Colour temperature is the approved way of measuring the colour from light bulbs and the scale goes from 2700 Kelvin (K) to 6400K. If you have a piece of steel and heat it up it will turn yellow, then redish, then white and then blue in the temperature range from 2700-6400K.
The established light bulbs which used a tungsten filament give a warm yellow light at a colour temperature of 2700K.
Standard halogen bulbs have a higher colour temperature which give a white colour over 3000K.
By raising the colour temperature to 3500K the glow is made whiter and the light colour is similar to a conventional fluorescent tube or authentic CFL energy saving light bulbs and LED bulbs.
Midday sunlight creates a colour temperature at the higher level of 5500K.
The colour temperature of light on an overcast day has a Kelvin reading of 6400K which is the top end of the range for light bulb colours.
There is one part that is complicated which is that a appointed cool colour temperature for energy saving light bulbs is at the top end of the range. On the contrary a warm colour temperature of 2700K, which is named warm because of the warm glow, is as a matter of fact at the cold end of the scale.
How to decide what Colour Temperature you need with energy saving light bulbs to meet your needs.
It is ideal to select a colour temperature of 2700k which is warm for general domestic living areas. Skin tones and peoples looks are enhanced with warm light and furthermore upholstery and soft furnishings have a more homely look. These are the reasons for warm light energy saving light bulbs and LED bulbs being the accepted choice for living areas.
Cool energy saving light bulbs and LED bulbs are appropriate for workshops, kitchens and laboratories where the intense white light gives very good visual definition.
For an area which is used for work and relaxation then the optimal energy saving light bulbs or LED bulbs would be in the range of 3000-5000K which give good visual clarity but not a too harsh light.
