Why Soapstone Is Becoming The Material Of Choice For Wood Stoves
Wood stoves and fireplaces are traditionally made of iron or steel and lined with ceramic firebrick. These materials have worked fine for decades but now soapstone is becoming more well known as a more superior material.
Soapstone is an igneous rock that was formed deep within the earth under extreme heat and pressure. It is known as being a soft rock that is easily carved with a knife. Because of this and its beautiful grain patterns, soapstone is used for carving and crafts.
Soapstone also has properties that make it an excellent material for heating. Soapstone is heat and chemical resistant so it will not deteriorate under the extreme temperatures and environment of a wood stove firebox. Soapstone is a dense stone that has an ability to absorb massive amounts of heat and release it over time.
With traditional metal wood stoves they put out a lot of heat while the fire is burning hot but then cool down as the fire dies. With soapstone, the stone absorbs the heat and releases it more evenly over a long period of time. This makes a soapstone stove put out a more comfortable heat that you can comfortable sit or stand next to.
One of the biggest advantages to soapstone for stoves is it will continue radiating heat long after the fire has gone out. The hot soapstone will continue to heat your home wile you are away and at night without you needing to get up to put wood on the fire.
Soapstone wood stoves tend to burn more efficiently and completely. The stone creates a much hotter burning chamber which burns the wood more completely. This produces more heat from less fuel and creates less smoke to pollute the air.
Soapstone can cost more than steel or iron built stoves but they will also last longer and produce more comfortable and efficient heat.
