Proper Inspection & Maintenance For Your Water Heater
A water heater is a necessary part of any household. In fact, heating water is one of the largest energy consumers in your home. When installing a new unit, you may notice that the thermostat is preset for a higher temperature than what is actually needed. This is not always the case, but it something to consider. By setting the temperature to a lower 120 degrees, the process will save energy costs.
Depending on the area in which you live, a water heater should undergo a routine inspection two times per year. If you live in an area that is prone to hard water, consider a monthly check-up to make sure that your water heater is functioning properly. If needed, you may drain water from the storage tank, which will remove buildup causing the unit to use more fuel than needed. This, too, will save on the energy bill by a reduction in the amount of usage. Another option is to insulate your water heater, which will increase the volume of hot water present in the unit. Before doing this, you must make sure that there are no leaks or cracks in the system. If there are, you must replace them before adding insulation.
There are several signs to watch out for, which may alert you that there is an impending problem with your water heater. Among them, the complete absence of hot water, not enough hot water or an inability to heat properly, overly heated water, a visible leak, obvious noises that are not common or a foul smell originating from the water heating unit. You can notice these factors when you wash your hands, do the dishes, take a shower or any other time that you use water. If there is a problem with the water heater, such as prolonged times standing at the sink waiting for warm water, or the total absence of any warm water at all, there is a good indication that the water heater needs to be inspected. In the end, it is much better to address the problem early on rather than waiting until even more damage is done.
