Crooked Lightswitches
Yes we all pretty much abhor crooked light switches and wall sockets. Why is it that a house is absolutely gorgeous with brand new wall papering, chandeliers, and even a fireplace for that matter, but random light switch boxes and wall sockets are so crooked you almost get dizzy looking at them? This is one of those phenomena that after pondering for several days, leaves you with no logical explanation except that SOMEONE was in a preeeetty big hurry.
And the worst thing about it is that no one seems to care! It's actually a pretty common thing to find that here in Japan, where everything else is respectable but then there are those confounded light switches. Is it really that hard of a thing to pop a pocket-sized spirit level on the side of the switch mount before attachment? That's what I determined had to be done! Now every time I have to replace a switch box, I make sure to check it with a level first.
I swore to myself that I would never follow in the footprints of those who are guilty of this embarrassing act. It's the age-old principle of symmetry that is followed explicitly at times but wretchedly neglected at others. I've heard that some old folks who stay at home a lot can actually go koo-koo if the room or house they live in is not symmetric. Over time they get so used to things being crooked that when/if they change environments they're known to suffer dizzy spells and whatnot.
Anyway, even if it's only to protect your old folks from dizzy spells I'd say it's worth it. I say protect your older generation and fix your crooked light switches! Heck, maybe it's not ONLY the older generation that suffers from this condition. So my advice is this: Keep a pocket-sized spirit level in your tool arsenal when working on your switch & electrical outlet boxes – you'll need it! The naked eye is known to play tricks on you.
