The Key Horse Handicapping Method For Profitable Bets
While I am not a big fan of exotic bets I also realize that many people enjoy playing them and a few individuals actually make a profit on them. I like the win bet but some people prefer exactas, pick threes, pick fours, pick sixes and other gadget bets. This article will focus on exotic bets that involve multiple races, the pick three, four, and six.
The important thing to realize about exotic bets is that unless you play a straight ticket, you are buying a lot of losing combinations. The more combinations you buy, the more likely you are to cash the ticket but it also means you need a bigger payoff to come out ahead. Trifecta players who key on one horse manage to pare the number of combinations down considerably, but in an eight horse race there are still 336 possible combinations.
Playing the pick three or pick four makes sense if you can single on a horse in at least one race. A pick six bet requires at least two such horses that you can single on. The idea with exotic bets is to find one good reliable horse to key and then have it win with a few long shots in the other legs of your pick three or pick four bet. This isn't exactly original thinking and many people attempt this very strategy every day.
If you want to try this strategy then your goal is to first find a few key horses. The best way to find a key horse is to respect the statistics that stand up across all tracks and the test of time. It may mean that you have to handicap a few programs to find the right horses, but when you do, you'll have very good key horses. Since you are using them in multiple race exotics, it won't matter so much if they are going off at low odds.
The first thing I look for in a key horse, is a horse that has succeeded at what it is being asked to do. It sounds silly but there are races almost every day where only one horse has actually won at the distance and level that it is being asked to run at today. They win at surprisingly good odds and they win often.
An example of a horse who faced very little competition and was part of some nice exotic payoffs was, Omaha Beach, running from post position number 4 in the 8th race at Philadelphia Park on March 30, 2009. Omaha Beach was returning after an impressive victory just 20 days prior to that event and therefore was racing within 30 days of his last race, another important statistic to keep in mind.
Only 5 horses started in that race and of them, only one other, the 1, Tin Soldier, had managed to win a race at Philadelphia at that distance. Omaha Beach's last speed figure was 94 a full 6 points higher than any other horse in the race and he went off at 6-5 odds and only paid $4.40 to win. But using the same horse in exotics like the pick three and a double netted big payoffs.
The double for the winner of the 8th race with the winner of the 9th race paid $50. The winner of the 9th race, New Identity, went off at 6-1 odds. Not exactly an extreme longshot and a horse that logically had to be included in an exotic bet, being the fourth favorite in the morning line.
Looking at the 7th race with a winner that paid $9.40, the 8th race with our favorite that paid $4.40, and the 9th race with the $14.40 winner, it was not an extremely difficult exotic bet to put together and yet the pick three paid $188. Just being wise enough to key on the 4, Omaha Beach, because he met the recency rule of having raced within 30 days and because only one other horse had managed to do what was being asked of them, you could hit a $50 double and a pick three without a lot of difficulty.
It is common sense, find a horse that is capable of doing what is asked and also, one that is racing back off a good solid effort within 309 days.
