More British energy consumers are choosing to switch their electricity supplies than ever before. The internet, along with government legislation, has made it easy for consumers to find the information they need to switch between suppliers and save money on electricity bills.
Switching means that energy suppliers are now competing more heavily for your custom and rates are dropping as a result. New customers tend to get the best treatment too, so switching means that you could benefit from one-off discounts and reduced rates, as well as better customer service.
1. Many comparison sites are now available on the internet to make it easy for you compare electricity packages from a range of suppliers at once. However, these sites do not include every provider, even missing some of the major ones, so you should not rely entirely on this form of comparison.
2. Those looking to cut their electricity bills can also save by switching the type of account they have. A dual fuel account, whereby you receive both your gas and electricity from the same company, will reduce your rates, and switching to a direct debit bill payment system will save you a few extra pounds each month.
3. Once you have chosen the provider you want to supply your electricity, just call them or fill out an online application at their website. They will then handle the switchover for you. It is best to advise your existing supplier of the situation too in the interests of a smooth switchover.
4. To help the whole process move more efficiently, there are several things that you can do prior to the switch. You should check your meter reading on the day of the changeover so that you know exactly how much you should be charged by your old provider.
5.Making sure that you have paid all of your current bills to your existing supplier will speed up the whole process, as any outstanding bills can prevent a switchover from taking place. You should also take a note of your electric meter serial number so that you are doubly sure that the meter you are being billed for by your new supplier is correct.
The process then usually takes between four and six weeks to complete, and is completely free. Your new supplier should keep you updated by post or email as to how the process is going, and will let you know of your switchover date and when the whole switchover has been completed.
