Building a Box Fort - Great For a Rainy Afternoon
Entertaining your young children on a rainy afternoon can be a challenge until you remember that a child still has the magic imagination of youth. So you can take the simplest of materials like a cardboard box and turn it into the most magnificent fort, and they will have hours of fun playing in it when it is completed.
Locate Some Good Cardboard Boxes
But first you will need some boxes. So as you get new television sets, refrigerators and computers, and put the boxes away literally for a rainy day. If you do not have large boxes, you can always build walls out of smaller boxes. If you do not have a collection of boxes, frequently your grocer will have plenty of boxes that they can give your. Before letting your child play with the boxes, make sure that you remove any jagged edge or staple that could hurt them.
Supervise Scissors
When you are building a fort out of boxes, you have a couple of choices. You can build with the boxes as they are, or you can cut them to any shape that you like. Depending on the age of your child, you will want to decide which way to proceed. At the very least, if you have large boxes, you may want to cut some windows and doors. If the kids are too young to do the cutting themselves, then you can have them draw the shape and you can cut it out. Then you can both assemble the fort with packing tape.
Be Creative when Accessorizing
Once the shell of the fort is built, you can let your kids do the decorating. Smaller boxes, marking pens, tape, glue and construction paper can fuel their imagination for decorating their fort. Found objects like rocks, bottle tops, plastic bottles, toilet paper rolls and egg cartons can also be used to make knobs, buttons, lanterns, and anything else that sparks your child's imagination. Your child can make a table out of a stack of old newspapers, and they can build a drawbridge with string and a piece of cardboard. They can build or draw a fireplace in their fort to keep warm, and keep a lookout in the tower for the enemy. Then any old blankets can be used for camouflage or as door covers, and pillows can be used to make a soft place to sit.
Fun for a While
After the fort is built and decorated, plan to have it around for a while. After all of the effort that your children put into building the fort, they will want to have some adventures in it, maybe even with their friends. So pick a corner of the room or some place off the beaten track to build the fort, because it may not survive a move very well. By leaving it up for a while, your children will not only play in it, but the will continue to improve the fort expanding their ideas and imagination just that much more.
