Getting The Best Garage Door Sizes For Your Home
Covering that gaping entry that is your garage may look daunting. And browsing through the wide range of garage door sizes and styles may look intimidating. However, remodeling this part of the house can be quite easy. All it takes is a bit of know-how.
Know What Are Already Out There Do-it-Yourself and pre-cut garage door sizes are pretty standard. The height usually measures seven feet. For single-car garages, the standard width is at eight to nine feet. Doors for two-car garages are often cut at 16 feet wide.
Materials vary from plywood to hardwood, from aluminum and stainless steel to fiberglass. Some panels are built with a foam insulation and weatherproofing materials.
Know Your Garage Space
Garage door sizes may come pretty uniform but they also come with gears and mechanical parts that take up a certain amount of space in the garage.
Here are the vital statistics you should have:
- The height and width of the door opening
- The length from the edge of the door opening to the corner. This is known as the sideroom. This will accommodate the vertical tracks, which will usually need about three to six feet of space. Measure the siderooms on the interior left and right side of the door opening. It is also advisable to keep these areas clear of shelving prior to installation.
- The length from the ceiling down to the top edge of the opening. This is also known as the headroom and where the garage door opener is usually installed. The required space for the headroom ranges from 12 to 14 inches. If in case you lack this kind of clearance, some garage door manufacturers have solutions for low headrooms.
- The length running from the interior front of the garage opening up to the opposite back wall. Also known as the backroom and helps estimate the space that the garage door will take up when it is open.
Take all measurements by inches and feet. The thickness of the door is more of a preference. Houses located in areas that experience cold weather and strong winds will benefit from the added insulation, and weather and wind proofing of thicker doors.
If your garage door falls within the standard size, check if your chosen door model includes installation and/or replacement. Single-panel doors can be easily installed by third-party contractors but more sophisticated systems will need trained professional installers.
Know When To Customize
Getting custom work can be more expensive but this is the common option when the garage opening size does not match the standard pre-cut sizes. In most cases, the garage opening is too wide or too tall. Specialized door sizes will also require the matching door opener and other mechanical parts.
The first step to investing a garage door is to get the size right. Know how much space is available for both the door and the garage opener. Having the perfect fit ensures that the door will open and close properly.
