The fluorescent lighting industry has seen many changes over the last few years. First and foremost, CFL fluorescent technology has improved ten fold. The biggest improvements have been realized in candelabra bulbs (also known as candelabra fluorescent bulb or candelabra light bulb) spiral fluorescent (spiral fluorescent bulbs), globe fluorescent (also known as globe compact fluorescent), and reflector light bulb (also know as fluorescent reflector bulb).
The underlying spiral fluorescent CFL tube which goes into the candelabra light bulb has been greatly reduced in size. This reduction in the size of the spiral fluorescent bulbs has been achieved without any sacrifice to the performance of the spiral fluorescent technology. Fast start times, high lumens per watt and long life have been maintained in these new tiny energy saver light bulbs. And now they actually fit into candelabra bulb fixtures and look GREAT. The spiral fluorescent tube is hidden behind the candelabra bulbs frosted outer shell so you can’t even tell that the candelabra bulb is actually a candelabra fluorescent bulb! The applications for this new candelabra fluorescent bulb technology are numerous. The greatest application is for the replacement of outdoor security and landscape light bulbs. Most outdoor security and landscape light bulbs use candelabra bulbs today. When a consumer uses incandescent or halogen candelabra bulbs in these applications they are throwing money away. The new candelabra fluorescent bulb mentioned above only requires one fourth the energy that the traditional candelabra bulbs use. Most homes have multiple outdoor candelabra bulbs. Each traditional candelabra bulb which is replaced with a fluorescent candelabra bulb (at the same net wattage or light output) will create an annual energy cost savings of about $15! If the average home has 20 candelabra bulbs this equates to an annual cost savings of $300. For middle income families this is REAL money.
In the area of standard spiral fluorescent bulbs similar advancements have been realized. The size of the internal spiral fluorescent CFL tube has been reduced by 2X while lumen per watt output has been maintained. This is called T-2 technology. This new T-2 spiral fluorescent technology also has the added benefit of being 100% lead free AND having 50% less mercury then the current T-3 spiral fluorescent technology. The new T-2 spiral fluorescent technology has a new amalgam technology which enables these fluorescent light bulbs to operate at 30% lower temperatures which further reduces the power required to drive these T-2 energy saver light bulbs.
Finally the new compact fluorescent PAR bulb or reflector light bulb that is now available to us offers longer life (10,000 hours instead of 8,000 hours), flicker free performance and faster time to full lumen output (rapid start). We have not yet found a good instant start fluorescent reflector bulb. The issue these instant start fluorescent reflector bulbs have is that they are no longer long life bulbs. The total life of these bulbs goes from 10,000 hours down to 5,000 hours today. There are advancements in CFL fluorescent technology which will be available in Q2 of 2010 which will offer a better life to start combination. We will provide updates here on the status of this development.
On the dimmable compact fluorescent front we have now sourced a dimmable CFL reflector that we like the performance of. The company that offers this technology is called Neptune Fluorescent Lighting. Their specification says that their dimmable compact fluorescent can be “dimmed” down to as low as 10% output. In our testing we have found that the dimming capability is more like 20%-25% which we find to be completely acceptable for regular household use. The cost of this dimmable CFL (compact fluorescent reflector) is still high at just over $9.00 each, but these compact fluorescent bulbs work well which is more then we can say for the other dimmable CFL bulbs we have tested. We are continuing our efforts to actively find test and approve new dimmable CFL suppliers. Stay tuned.
