Troubleshoot Air Conditioner- Not Cooling
We recommend that all central air conditioner repairs must be handled by an EASY AC Repair Specialist. Following, you'll find guidance to diagnose the problem based on symptoms.
Air conditioner is not cooling-
Typically, when an air conditioner runs and doesn't push cold air may just need to be cleaned. This diagnosis is best performed on a warm to hot day. Make sure to read your owner's manual before performing steps below.
1) Make sure power is off to the unit. If not, locate the shut off panel which is normally near the house wall next to the outdoor unit. If the shut off panel is not located there, shut off the air conditioner's switch at the main electrical panel.
2) Find the outdoor condenser and clean all dirt, leaves and debris away.
3) Locate the protective grille or cover and remove from the air conditioner condenser's fins.
4) With a soft brush, clean dirt and debris from the fins. Very carefully, vacuum the fins with a soft vacuum brush attachment. Be careful, and do not damage the fins.
5) Now for the top grille- Locate the screws, unscrew and remove from the unit. The fan may be attached to the grill. If so, take careful steps not to disconnect wires.
6) Once inside, begin hosing down the fins lightly. To much water pressure can damage the fins.
7) Assemble the unit as you found it.
Now time to test. Reset the power and set the thermostat to a cool temperature, around 72 degrees should work. Let the air conditioner run for 5 minutes. Now, feel the two pipes that connect to the condenser unit. One of the pipes should be cold, and the other should feel warm.
If air conditioner is still not blowing cool air, call an air-conditioning specialist.
